Educational / Toys
The Speak & Spell project was started in 1976 and created the first single-chip LPC speech synthesizer with the TMC0280. The improvements made have led to the production of speech synthesis processors such as the TMS5100, 5200 and 5220 for use in commercial products, such as the TI-99/4A.
The same technology has been used in other toys such as Speak & Read and Speak & Math, Learn, Count and Speak, the Talking Book, and the most famous Jiminy Cricket. In this exhibition you can see some of the rarest ones, from the Buddy (Germany), the Speak & Spell for the Japanese and Spanish markets, up to the 21st century Chinese clone.

SPEAK & SPELL
Language Translator. Shortly after the invention of synthesizer technology capable of reproducing human speech with voices stored in ROM (Read-Only Memory - integrated circuits), the Language Translator was launched. This product was renamed Language Tutor in the early 1980s, and both devices were marketed simultaneously. Around the same time, a more affordable version of the Language Tutor, called Language Teacher, was introduced, which lacked a speaker.

In these galleries, we’ll take a trip through time to explore the iconic calculators built by Texas Instruments!
From the legendary LED models that made TI history, to the sleek LCD versions, all the way to the mighty Desktop and the quirky Overhead calculators — there's something for every enthusiast!
Get ready for a dive into glowing red digits, green displays, clicky keys, and designs straight out of the ‘70s, ‘80s, and beyond.
Have fun and… enjoy the nerdy ride! 🔍🧮✨
In this gallery we will talk about Texas Instruments watches. We start with the LED and LCD watches,to those with analog hands, given as gifts to employees or sold as gadgets. There are some booklets, where the functions of the watches are described.
Have fun !
Texas-Instruments (TI) revolutionized the digital wristwatch industry with the introduction of the first under $20 LED watch in 1976. Soon, TI produced licensed LED watches that tied in with the release of Star Wars in 1977 for only $16.95, and the price kept dropping. By the end of the decade, industry price cutting had driven several high-end digital watch manufacturers out of business. TI itself suffered from its own success—dropping profit margins forced the company to exit the watch business by 1980. By then, digital watches had become inexpensive commodity items.
In this gallery, you’ll get lost among a treasure trove of scanned images: old-school ads, quirky announcements, dusty bulletins, and vintage magazines that smell like nostalgia.
Enjoy your trip down memory lane!
Texas Instruments (TI) shook up the digital watch world in 1976 with a real market bombshell — the first LED watch priced under $20! And they didn’t stop there: the following year, they jumped on the Star Wars craze, releasing themed LED watches for just $16.95 — a treat for fans and a blow to the competition. Prices kept falling, and before long, it was a bloodbath: several high-end digital watchmakers were forced to shut down. Ironically, TI itself got crushed by its own success — with profit margins shrinking fast, they bowed out of the watch game by 1980. By then, those once-shiny digital watches had become cheap, everyday gadgets for the masses.

Lapel Pins , Gadgets , Integrated Circuit, & Transistors Texas Instruments
The Texas Instruments pin collection is a fascinating testament to the company's history and 20th-century technology culture. Often distributed as promotional items, corporate awards, or souvenirs for employees and partners, these items embody TI's visual identity and innovation over the decades. In addition to these charming objects, we've included others, such as integrated circuits still in their cases, ready to be mounted on PCBs..
Welcome to the TEXAS INSTRUMENTS web museum. Let me introduce myself. I'm Fabrizio, the curator of this online museum. I have been a fan of all types of technology since I was young. This museum is dedicated to the conservation, documentation and sharing of technology of all these objects that have made the history of Texas Instruments and beyond !! Much of the technology we enjoy today, such as personal computers, smartphones, tablets, gaming systems and a host of other devices with a microprocessor "brain", has its genesis in the technologies developed following tenacious experiments.
Together with other enthusiasts we are promoters of many initiatives including cultural activities, such as conventions, conferences, but above all participation in exhibitions, fairs, meetings with students in schools and museums by making our TI material available.
This museum is always looking for watches, calculators, games, computers of historical interest. If you have one of these objects made especially in the 20th century, the museum may be interested. If you have something that seems to fit these interests and you are looking for a new home, contact US with information about your object.

The Story of a Passion: From Texas Instruments to the Watch Museum !
I display a LED non erano molto efficienti all'epoca.

The Story of a Passion: From Texas Instruments to the Watch Museum !
In a few words, we tell the story of how one of the greatest passions was born: the passion for technology related to Texas Instruments (TI). A passion that came to life in a unique context, a corner of the world where history and innovation intertwined. The birth of this passion took place in my parents' home, "Teresa and Giorgio" during the '70s and '80s, located near the Texas Instruments facility (Cittaducale - Rieti - Italy), a place that represented the beating heart of a true technological revolution.
During those years, the proximity to the factory allowed me to accumulate a large amount of material: production scraps, direct purchases from the factory store, gifts from friends and relatives of my parents, and much more. This is how the journey began a journey that slowly saw the growth of an extraordinary collection, the result of an overwhelming passion. Over the following years, the acquisitions became increasingly numerous and uncontrollable, coming from all corners of the world. The search for rare and significant pieces fueled a passion that extended far beyond mere curiosity.
This journey would not have been possible without the help of many people, who shared their love for the history of technology, offering objects and materials from all over the globe. My deepest thanks go to them, as they made it possible to expand a project that eventually took the form of a true Watch Museum dedicated to Texas Instruments.
But how did this passion start? It all began with the fascination for Texas Instruments' iconic products: the famous Datamath calculator, the TI99/4A computer, and the unmistakable TI-500 watch. Each object told a story of innovation and technology that marked an era. These products, along with many others, contributed to writing the history of Texas Instruments and, by extension, that of an entire generation.
From this passion for technology, what is now considered the largest watch museum dedicated to Texas Instruments was born. A place that not only houses historical objects but also a piece of living history, capable of telling how innovation changed our way of life. Each object, each displayed piece, is not just a memory, but a witness to a time when Texas Instruments was at the center of an extraordinary age of innovation.
The passion for these objects is much more than just a collection. It is the result of a love for technology, history, and the evolution of a brand that changed the course of history. Today, the museum stands as a point of reference for enthusiasts and scholars alike, a place where past and future meet, where every object tells a story that continues to live through time.
A journey that began with a simple passion has given life to an extraordinary work, a museum that continues to grow and enrich itself with new pieces every day. A tribute to a brand that has left an indelible mark on the history of technology.
From this was born the largest watch museum...Texas Instruments
My little anecdote !!
When I was growing up in the 1970s, the first most memorable watch I ever owned was a digital watch made by Texas Instruments (TI) ... and when I got it for Christmas, I was living in the FUTURE !!! TI-500 LED Watch (Slim Dial) The watch was part of TI's TI-500 line of LED digital watches. The heart of the watches in this watch line was the same for everyone, but the style of the case was different. Although the LED watches of the era were quite futuristic as it is, the version I got is what I think can be considered the most futuristic looking watch in the TI-500 line. It had a narrow dark red lens that sat squarely in the middle of a "stacked trapezoidal" case. The narrow lens resembled the visor of a space robot. There were some special versions of this watch that had images printed, such as racing cars, at the bottom of the dial. Under the battery cover, two LR44 watch batteries are inserted which will give you around 30-40 days as long as you don't keep pressing its shiny buttons all day.
A watch like this didn't show the time all the time. He would drain the battery in days, if not hours. LED displays weren't very efficient back then. To view the time, press a silver colored button that protrudes at the top right of the watch body. Pressing it once displays the time for about one second, then switches off. You can hold the button so that it is displayed longer and after a few seconds it will switch to the display of the actual seconds that are increasing. Press the button twice and it will show you the day in MM / DD format. It does not keep track of the current year.
The only other watch button is recessed into the watch body at the bottom right. Use a pen or pencil to press it and you can set the time and date through a series of button presses. You can also "synchronize" the number of seconds, as I did every morning when I came to school and synchronized it with the school bell clock. I knew until the SECOND when the bell would ring at the end of the lesson!
That said, this style watch was the first in my life when it came to digital watches. Yet it was the only LED watch I would ever own for a long time. LCD based watches soon entered the scene in the late 1970s and I never thought I'd spend the rest of my life buying "cool" Texas Instruments digital watches !!

…to PEEK&POKE, one of the few permanent displays of vintage computing technology in Europe. Opened in 2007 as an educational and a non-profit project by a couple of computer enthusiasts, the museum today spreads across 300 square meters and features more than 1000 exhibits from the world and local computer history alike. We are home to anything from calculators and game consoles to rare and obsolete computers from the 20th century, as well as an extensive library of computer books and magazines from that era. Take a break from an ever-advancing computer world of today and step into the past at a place we hope to always be a fun gathering space for younger generations to envision our future by learning from the technologies of the past.
Oh, and not to forget… Most of our exhibits can be peeked at and poked as much as you'd like! :)
It could take a lot to tell about our group, so I’ll try to sum it up as much as I can. Me (Xad) and Fox started about in 1982, by using a ZX81.
We used to spend hours and hours typing in programs written in Basic from various computer magazines to see what they did. The programs were often very basic Games that did not always work or even save properly to tape, and would sometimes fail to re-load before they have even been run.
The ZX81 had this horrible membrane keyboard. The ZX81 that we owned also had a dodgy power cable that could full out at any time after hours of entering thousands of lines of code containing endless lines of data.. Then we founded a group, called ‘Dracula Soft‘. It happened in 1982-83, we were three: Xad, Leo, Fox. At the beginning we had fun programming in LM (Language Machine) with a Commodore 64. I remember the nights we three spent in my very small bedroom to code and to listen to the games sound files. Personally, I enjoyed so much those kinds of music and I adored theirs authors, people like Rob Hubbard, Martin Galway, Ben Daglish.

Zeptobars started in 2012, when I was working on "homemade" ICs. Before trying to design or make your own it is beneficial to look at work of others. This on-hands experience is invaluable. Original goals were to observe manufacturing of MIFARE tags at Mikron, which then was starting manufacturing on 180nm technology (this was concluded in 2013), look closer at KR580VM80A - CPU of my first computer (this was concluded with full reverse engineering in 2015) and finally - look with greater details at simpler CMOS chips (7400/4000 series) as a starting point for DIY design.

Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Fabrizio, and together with other friends we take care of the museum dedicated to Texas Instruments. This voluntary organization was created to preserve, document and share the technology of all the objects that have made the history of Texas Instruments and beyond (for example Apple and HP ), the final goal is the birth of a museum in the city of Rieti (Italy), where in the 1970s he built one of the most important factories in Italy and Europe.
Much of the technology we enjoy today, such as personal computers, smartphones, tablets, gaming systems, and myriad other devices equipped with a microprocessor “brain,” has its genesis in technologies developed as a result of tenacious experimentation.
We have been passionate about all types of technology since we were children, we try to arouse everyone's curiosity but especially boys and girls from generations younger than ours, we are promoters of many initiatives, including cultural ones, such as conferences, but above all participation in exhibitions, fairs, meetings with students in schools and museums by making our Texas Instruments material available.
This museum is always looking for watches, calculators, games, computers of historical interest. If you own one of these items made primarily in the 20th century, the museum may be interested.
If you have something that seems to match these interests and are looking for a new home, please contact us with information about your item, which you would like to donate or sell.
